"Style is about empowering individuality, confidence and freedom."
Wise words from Tanya Puka, founder of Fond Boutique. But what else would you expect from Best of Calgary’s Best Dressed winner? Only the most inspirational words and a Carrie-Bradshaw-worthy closet.
From a young age, Tanya found true love in fashion. Her first taste of Calgary’s fashion community was when she was working alongside friends who started a casual apparel company. Being involved with them, PARK (an organization promoting local designers), and the contagious energy of this unfolding fashion community convinced Tanya to pursue her passion and open her own boutique.
Tanya has a background in branding and communications. When combined with a knack for finding second-hand steals this chica is a force to be reckoned with. She is passionate about self-empowerment through style and elevating the YYC consignment experience.
Who is your style icon?
I’ve always loved Erin Wasson for her boho-rock look and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy for her timeless class. Alexa Chung wears tomboy style well – she’s been inspiring me lately.
How would you describe your own style?
Classic. I love denim, structure and black…
What is your favourite consignment/thrift find?
I was just in LA and found a pair of Christian Louboutin Espadrilles for a steal. I victory danced hard at the till.
What inspired you to start Fond Boutique? Tell me about the journey of the brand.
I was inspired to create what I couldn’t find. I travelled to Japan last fall and fell in love with the culture, fashion and people. They take care of and prize their fashion like they do their children!
Also consignment shopping felt boutique – it was the elevated experience I was looking for.
What was the inspiration behind the name?
I started thrifting and reselling with my best friend and local artist Katie Green, at the Market Collective. She’s the gal who always guns it out with me for the mandatory six hours in Value Village. “Fond” is meant to define the reaction you feel towards beautiful and overlooked ‘found’ clothing. For me, thrifted-finds are always more cherished because they aren’t easy to come by.
What advice would you give to entrepreneurs?
Don’t be afraid to pursue your passion! Our world is changing rapidly and so is the expectation of what a career looks like. Also, look for a mentor in your field of interest and ask a lot of questions. Challenge yourself. Find acceptance in failure. Be kind.
How do you stay motivated?
My consigners keep me motivated. I want consignment to feel transparent while providing an incredibly rewarding experience – I’m always aiming for that perfect formula.
What is your current style must-have?
Chunky heeled sandals. Loving the Chloe Gala’s this season.
Where do you get inspiration from?
Travel, architecture, interior design… artsy foreign fashion mags are always the best inspiration tombs!
What is next for Fond?
Stay tuned to find out… Big things!
